AMERICAN EXPEDITIONARY FORCES
YOUNG MEN’S CHRISTIAN ASSOCIATION
ARMY OF OCCUPATION
January 7, 1919
Dear Sister and all.
It has been some time since I have written to you. I got back to my company again the 27th of December. We are in a town called Engers on the east bank of the Rhine river in Germany. The weather is not very cold here. There is no snow yet, and it does not freeze ice to amount to anything.
I received a letter from Pop a few days ago and was surprised to hear that they were back in Colorado again. I did not get any mail all the time I was away from my outfit, so did not know anything of what was going on at home.
Joe was lucky enough to get through the war without getting a scratch. The building we stay in is right on the river bank, we can stand at the window and watch the steam boats passing up and down the river which is about half a mile wide at this place.
I received a Christmas box of candy from the La Plata County Red Cross a few days ago. I will enclose some postcard views of this country and the town we are in.
Will close with love to all,
Your Brother
Robert E. Schalles
1st Amb. Co. 2nd Div.

This is a closer view of the building we occupy.

This used to be a military school. Now used as an American field hospital.

The tower on the right is an old watch tower. The water is at present up over the small railroad shown in the picture.

Port of the city of Coblenz a few miles from here where 3rd army headquarters are located.
